Underworld Ascendant's trailer takes us to some deep, dark places

Underworld Ascendant's Stygian Abyss is looking better than ever.

Few things get players more excited than a spiritual sequel to a beloved game - especially when figures like Warren Spector lead development. By that token, fewer things make them more disappointed than waiting years to play it. Thankfully in Underworld Ascendant's case, a release date is quickly approaching. Underworld Ascendant is expected to launch later this year following its extremely successful 2015 Kickstarter campaign. Even better, OtherSide Entertainment has a new trailer showing why Ascendant was worth the wait.

Underworld Ascendant is a spiritual follow-up to the action-RPG classic Ultima Underworld. In this game, players will delve into a huge underground dungeon where multiple factions clash for supremacy. Along the way, heroes face everything from reanimated skeletons to deadly lizardmen while completing quests that influence the entire region.

The trailer itself is an introduction to gameplay that highlights experimentation with both your character and environment. OtherSide is emphasizing an open, fluid playstyle, where skill points can be assigned in any combination of combat, stealth, and magic abilities. You'll even be able to find creative solutions to problems, whether laying traps for unsuspecting enemies or levitating objects to reach inaccessible areas. Ascendant even has some nice touches in the little details either - like how bows shake in your hands while an arrow is drawn.

Underworld Ascendant will launch for PC sometime in 2018.
