Uncharted 4: achieving 60FPS is going to be "really f**king hard"

Uncharted 4 developer Naughty Dog isn't sure it can lock down 60 FPS for Nathan Drake's next adventure.

PS4 exclusive Uncharted 4 is expected to be a demonstration of what the console can really do, thanks to Naughty Dog's reputation for squeezing amazing performance out of hardware.

A Naughty Dog representative had previously said the developer was targeting 1080p/60FPS for Uncharted 4, but when GameInformer asked game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann how difficult it would be to achieve, they said "really f**king hard".

"That's true for any game," they added.

"It was really hard on The Last of Us: Remastered, and that's a game we had finished and we knew exactly what the end result needs to look like.

"And here we're trying to push the boundaries of what this game can look [like], and do realistic, real-time cutscenes - and trying to do 60FPS is really hard."

Asked whether the team was still aiming for 60FPS, the paid they didn't know.

"The objective for us is just to make the best experience and right now we're trying to push the look," they said.

"Then we'll see where we're at and re-assess. We're constantly making choices throughout production of what's going to make the game feel best and look its best."

Well, if history is anything to judge by, Naughty Dog's second, third and fourth PS4 games will make the first look dated, even if the first seems amazing at the time. Just think back to the first Uncharted (mind-blowing) and then the second (double mind-blowing).

In general, the developer seems pretty happy with the new hardware.

"It's butter. Just smooth," Straley and Druckmann said.

"It's pretty amazing, to tell you the truth. There are things that aren't issues that used to be issues in the past. It's amazing how quickly you forget.

"There's always limits on resources, but all the problems that used to exist are gone. We just have a new set of problems now."
