Uncharted 3 eschews dedicated servers to foster long-term support plans

Naughty Dog has explained that Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception won't have dedicated servers because of significant ongoing costs.

"We're not going to have dedicated servers, [we] made that decision long time ago [and] we built the current player host-client architecture," a representative commented on Naughty Dog's Twitter.

"[The] decision for that server architecture was to be better able to support our fans long-term if we can [and] want."

Naughty Dog is hoping the reduced costs of client-host architecture could keep Uncharted 3's multiplayer up and running for several years.

"The cost delta [between] dedicated & non-dedicated [servers] is huge long term. Eventually someone will say it costs too [much and] shut them down.

"My personal hope is that by keeping costs down [and with] strong enough community, we could be in a position to consider [four or more years] of uptime.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is a PlayStation 3 exclusive due in early November. It's currently in open multiplayer beta.

Thanks, CVG.
