Titanfall matchmaking changes prioritise skill over speed

Titanfall's matchmaking system has been updated to avoid you constantly finding yourself playing against the same opponents regardless of skill imbalance.

In an update on the game's website, Respawn Entertainment acknowledged "a problem of a lack of variety in the teams".

"The game finds teammates and opponents for you by using this skill data. After we build teams and those two teams play a few matches it is usually very clear which team is better. However, we weren't taking full advantage of this new information," the developer wrote.

To address this issue, Repsawn has made two changes. First, it has sacrificed a little speed in matchmaking to help source teams of equal skill levels. Second, it will periodically split teams and mix them around to find opponents better suited to each other.

"Did you lose to a really great team? We'll make them disappear and replace them with a new opposing team - and they will have no idea that you just got your butts kicked," the developer said.

"This should end some of the frustration with playing for extended periods when you're having an off night."

You can check out the new matchmaking system by selecting the "Improved Matchmaking (Beta)" playlist in the classic multiplayer section. The system may roll out to other playlists after tweaking.

Respawn noted that it has observed a nice, symmetric skill graph, which you can view through the link above.
