Marvel and Sega announced today a third-person adventure game based on the God of Thunder himself, Thor.

Thor: The Video Game has players taking on an array of ancient enemies and beasts from Norse mythology using different battle strategies and elemental powers.

In the game, Thor’s legendary hammer Mjolnir will allow players to command the powers of the storm - wind, thunder and lightning - and earn Valor in combat. Players will also be able to select from other abilities, and acquire new attacks, powers and upgrades.

"We are proud to be bringing Thor to his first solo video game adventure", commented Gary Knight, senior VP of marketing at Sega.

"Thor: The Video Game will finally bring the immense power of this iconic hero to lifelong fans, and introduce the God of Thunder to a whole new audience as a true Marvel Super Hero.”

The PS3 and 360 versions of Thor will feature melee combos, ranged hammer throws, elemental powers and an upgrade system for Thor’s powers as gamers progress in a cinematic format.

PSP, Wii and DS players will be privy to the same game story, but visuals will be presented in a comic book style instead.

Writer and lead Thor comic book author Matt Fraction was brought on as a story consultant for Thor: The Video Game, which is slated to launch around the same time as the upcoming film adaptation from Marvel Studios.

It's out next year.
