Deck13's The Surge is set in a dystopian future where Earth is nearing "the end of its life"

Deck13 has released a piece of artwork for its upcoming action-RPG The Surge, showing one of the environments players will encounter as they explore a dystopian future version of Earth, which is nearing "the end of its life."

Inhabitants of the planet dwell in overpopulated cities where they work together to survive. Social programs have become "saturated" by the ageing population and environmental diseases are increasing.

Here'a story blurb:

"As the intelligence of technology incrementally increased over the years, many jobs for the human race had been made redundant, forcing Earth's citizens to head out into the suburbs seeking labor, aided by exoskeletons to improve their efficiency. The world of The Surge offers a very grim vision of the future, where the evolution of our technology, our society and our relation with the environment led to a decadent state of the Human civilization."

Announced in July after being teased around E3 2015, The Surge features varied combat mechanics and a character progression system based on modular upgrades through combat.

More information on the game is promised in the "following months," and it is set for a 2017 release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
