The Last of Us 2 isn't actually in development right now (but probably will be soon)

An interview with Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann has given some clarity to all the Last of Us sequel speculation and rumours.

Back in June voice actor Nolan North, who played Joel in the original, very casually let slip that Naughty Dog were working on a sequel to their critical and commercial hit. Now, in an article about Uncharted 4 published in Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Druckmann has fleshed out exactly what North was talking about.

The short version is that a prototype of The Last of Us 2 was being worked on before work began on Uncharted 4 - in fact, prototypes for several different games were in the works - but right now everyone is focused on the next Uncharted. "We were brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with new characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas", Druckmann says.

"So, I guess (North) was kind of right in that we were working on stuff, but we don't know what we're doing next and we won't know until probably a few months after we finish Uncharted 4." In other words, The Last of Us 2 will probably happen (especially since the original sold over 6 million copies), but it's not in active development right now.

The magazine with the full interview and preview will be available on September 25.

Meanwhile, the original The Last of Us is discounted on both PS3 and PS4 this week.
