How The Evil Within looks with gore mode on

The Evil Within has been censored in Japan, but players can opt in to "gore mode" with DLC. Here's how the two versions stack up.

The Evil Within is called Psychobreak in Japan, and despite developer Tango Gameworks local roots, it has been edited to meet CERO D content guidelines.

According to the game's Japanese website, the "Gore Mode" DLC will allow users to experience what western gamers get straight out of the box.

In the gallery below you'll see three images of enemies hit by explosions. The first is the vanilla Japanese version, and the next two show how bodies are dismembered with gore switched on.

This next batch shows the results of headshots. With gore off, enemy heads remain attached to their bodies, as in the first image. In the western version, their heads explode and are missing from corpses.

Finally, corpses lying around in the environment will be discreetly covered if you choose not to have gore enabled.

The first review for The Evil Within went up last night. It arrives on PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on October 14 in North America and Europe, and October 16 in Australia.
