The Division developer Massive is working on a battle royale game - report

Massive, developer of The Division, is reportedly taking a stab at making a battle royale game.

The Swedish studio, according to a new Gamereactor report, is currently working on the game.

The report says that Ubisoft asked the developer to "look into" the sub-genre in January. After exploring it, Massive reportedly came back with a fun idea that won't take too long to make.

It's interesting that this is apparently a new game and not an off-shoot or even an add-on to The Division. The reason being that Survival, one of the game's expansions, sort of dabbled into this concept, though without the last man standing element.

In fact, Massive polled The Division players about whether they'd like to see a battle royale mode in Survival over a year ago, so the studio has definitely been looking into this for a while.

This could still be a new game that uses The Division assets, or perhaps it's one of the modes in the upcoming The Division 2, which the studio is currently working on.

That said, the idea that Ubisoft is working on a battle royale thing is hardly surprising. The publisher outright confirmed in an earning's call that battle royale modes is something we'll see in DLC for future games.

Until more details are revealed, however, it's best to take the rumour with a pinch of salt.
