Crytek's VR climbing sim is out now - launch trailer

The Climb also serves as a handy emergency emetic.

Crytek's VR climbing sim is out now - launch trailer

The Climb looks pretty gorgeous. Beautiful landscapes spread out before you - or rather, behind and to the side of you, because when you're climbing you probably shouldn't spend a lot of time looking at anything but handholds. But at the top, it probably looks great.

Looking down is, uh, not recommended for those who suffer vertigo, since Crytek aimed to faithfully recreate the feeling of hanging hundreds of metres above ground level. If you've tried any of the new virtual reality headsets you'll know we've come a heck of a long way in a few short years, and your stomach will absolutely react to the sight of a deadly plummet just as if it were real, even if you know better.

I love how VR engineers have been working their butts off to cure motion sickness, but Crytek goes and makes a game that will make some people vomit no matter how finely tuned it is. What a terrific use of CryEngine's power, eh?

The trailer above reveals a new location called Canyon, which was inspired by the Grand Canyon and other sites in the US. It joins the snowy mountains of the Alps as well as the towering cliffs above a tropical island shown in the original reveal. There's also a VR training environment.

You can grab The Climb now on PC for Oculus Rift, via the Oculus Home store.
