TF2, Dota 2 creators have earned an average of $15,000 each

Remember how Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 item creators had earned over $10 million in royalties by June 2013? Turns out that figure was generated by a surprisingly small number of creators.

In a slide shown at the Steam Developer Days event and posted by The Verge, Valve revealed that the $10,219,716 in UGC earnings recorded in 2013 was split between just 661 creators, for an average of $15,455 each.

That's some serious cash for designing optional add-ons for a free-to-play game.

A few other interesting snippets regarding Valve's user-generated content emerged from the event thanks to a couple of tweets. There are 500 million items in Team Fortress 2, of which more than 90% are user-generated. 17 million account holders own items, and have performed 4 billion actions on them.
