Hothead games has released a small trailer, showing of the quirkiness of Swarm.
We were given a demonstration of the game at PAX, and it looks rather fun, and if you checked out the developer walkthrough of the game we posted last week, you'll get to see exactly what we saw during the hourly demonstration.
In Swarm, the player controls a group of 50 Swarmites as they traverse an extremely hostile environment. There are loads of puzzles to solve in this sadistic place, and many different implements just waiting to kill off the majority of your swarm.
The game setting is like a rather large gauntlet full of traps, chasms, and bombs and there will be many times you will get down to less than half the amount of Swarmites you started out with. No matter though, you will come across spawn points full of DNA that spit out more of the little blue creatures, bringing your total swarm number back up to a comfortable 50.
As long as you have one Swarmite left, it's not game over, however, there's not only safety in numbers but strategy as well.
In one instance shown at PAX, the Swarmites must cross this rather large gully. To ensure that at least some make it across, the blue fellas jump on top of one another and form a large "totem pole". At this point, the player would start heading towards the gully and jump across it at the last possible second.
Of course, the Swarmites higher up make it across, while the others become martyrs and plummet to their deaths.
When we asked if there was a "point" to all of this, meaning why are these little guys here in the first place and what do they wish to accomplish - we were told: "survival".
Yep. That's pretty much it. Instead of focusing on a game with loads of back-story, Hothead just went for zany fun and skillful play, which looks to be exactly what you're going to get with this download-only title.
It looked like loads of fun, honestly, and you can judge for yourself throughthe trailer posted below.
Swarm is slated for release in early 2011 on PSN and XBL.
