Latest Super Smash Bros. game may be Masahiro Sakurai's last

Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai may he hanging his hat up when it comes to the series, according to an interview published in the latest issue of Game Informer.

Speaking with the magazine, Sakurai said while there will likely be more Super Smash Bros. games developed in the future, his involvement is unlikely at this point.

"I can't positively declare there won't be [another Smash Bros. game]," Sakurai said. "With both Melee and Brawl, I made those games with the thought that there wouldn't be any more sequels. Thus, I really can't deny the chance for another.

"However, as for myself, I don't think there will be."

Sakurai said the Wii U and 3DS versions involved so much work, it would be a massive undertaking to top the current version with a future release.

"Our intention was to provide extra merits to the game which go far beyond the sale price," he said. "In terms of scope, and in terms of sheer number of characters, we went beyond our limits long ago.

"You could say that all the effort in the past to stretch out, keep pushing myself, and provide all these extra merits wound up tightening the noose around my neck in the future."

While the latest game in the series may be his last, Sakurai said someone else make take the series over in the future, yet at the same time, he has "trouble picturing someone else" taking his place and providing fans with "all this value-added content without me."
