Super Mario Odyssey doesn't have a Game Over screen

It's never game over in Super Mario Odyssey, quite literally.

Nintendo has revealed that the upcoming Super Mario Odyssey will not have a Game Over screen. When you fail or die for any reason, you'll instead just lose ten coins and that's it.

This interesting bit of news was shared by Nintendo through the official Japanese twitter for Super Mario Odyssey. Nintendo used a GIF of Mario dying to a Spiny to illustrate how this is going to work.

According to Rocket News 24's translation, here's what the tweet said: "If Mario’s health drops to zero, or if he falls down a bottomless pit, you’ll lose 10 of your coins. But…! No matter how many times you’ll mess up, there’s never a game over."

This is a bit of a big change, since Mario games have traditionally thrown the Game Over screen when you ran out of lives. The concept of 'lives' doesn't exist in Super Mario Odyssey, it sounds like. We still don't know what happens if you run out of coins, though.

Super Mario Odyssey releases October 27 on Switch.
