According to Capcom community manager Matthew Edwards, the purpose of Fight Money is to reward players over time.
Details in terms of pricing and accumulation rates are still being "ironed out" but leveling up characters is one way to earn Fight Money.
Completing Daily Challenges will also earn players the in-game currency, and the challenges range from winning three matches in a row to landing 10 Screw Pile Drivers with Zangief.
Players can also earn money through "a plethora of online and offline modes."
Fight Money can be used to purchase characters in the 2016 Season. Six characters which can be purchased using the currency will be announced at a later date. Adding these in, this brings the roster total to 22 fighters by the beginning of 2017.
The characters will be released individually and will be spaced out throughout the year after the core game launch.
The fighter Dhalsim was announced today for Street Fighter 5, along with a February 16 release in the US and Europe on PC and PlayStation 4.
