Steam plays host to mods, beginning this week

The modding community may not be quite as prolific as it once was, but maybe it just needs a little push. Or at least, that seems to be what the little voices in Valve’s head are saying, with the game developer-turned-storefront-owner’s plan to stock a portion of Steam’s unlimited virtual shelf space with a few popular PC game mods.

Sometime within the next seven days, Age of Chivalry, D.I.P.R.I.P., Insurgency, Synergy, and Zombie Panic will all be put up for download. Owners of any Source-powered game will, of course, be able to play them for free.

Additionally, Valve will integrate its number-crunching, stat-tracking Steamworks service with every mod hosted on Steam – a move that could send ripples through the entire modding community.

Kudos to Valve for this one. Now let’s just hope Newell and co. decide to extend their steamy love to non-Source mods as well.
