Will Visceral's Star Wars game be a Mercenaries-like open world affair?

The Star Wars game in the works at Visceral Games invites excited speculation with every little tease.

The Star Wars license is getting a bit of a work out at EA since the publisher cut a deal with Disney. The most prominent result of this arrangement is Star Wars Battlefront, which releases later this year, but we're also quietly excited about the very mysterious title in the works at Visceral Games.

If you've got your fingers crossed for an open world Star Wars game, we've got a very tiny little hint that it might be on the cards, courtesy of game director Scott Warner.

In a lengthy Twitter discussion of Pandemic's Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction (which began life as a sequel to the Strike series of helicopter action games, apparently) Warner made this comment about the classic open world adventure:

What does that have to do with Star Wars? Nothing, until Warner followed up with this image of Han Solo modded into Mercenaries:

Is that a hint that the new Visceral game goes back to Warner's roots in Mercenaries? Obviously we have no way of knowing, but let's all geek out anyway.

We don't know very much about Visceral's Star Wars project, but we expect it to be narrative-driven - that's what the Dead Space and Battlefield: Hardline developer is known for, after all, and Uncharted writer Amy Hennig is on board.

That said, there's no reason to believe that means a traditional A to B story slog; games like GTA and more recently The Witcher 3 have more than demonstrated that open world gaming is compatible with a heavy narrative focus.
