Square licenses Umbra 3.1 middleware

Square Enix has signed an agreement to use Umbra Software's middleware Umbra 3.1 suite in its future game projects. The rendering software helps developers cut down on CPU and GPU processing time, and according to Gamasutra, "optimizes parts of a game like rendering, content streaming, artificial intelligence, and game logic." The middleware can also be used for framerate optimization all through the pre-process allowing artists the option of not "manually placing portals in their game worlds." Interesting. Umbra 3.1 is used in iOS, PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and handheld systems.
