Sony patents may be tied to rumored PS4 VR headset

More evidence suggesting Sony is possibly readying its own VR headset for PS4 appeared today, thanks to a couple patents dug up by a NeoGaf user.

The patents filed by Sony in May 2013 are for an audio system and a head mounted display. The audio patent discusses ways of "alerting a gamer to a real-world emergency, such as the sound of an alarm or a crying baby, or an object moving quickly towards your head," reports Eurogamer.

The head mounted display patent mentioned motion detection and image stabilization, and other tech related jargon.

All standard stuff, but evidence that Sony's VR plans continue to move forward. There's even a pretty picture, right.

The patent inventors are listed as former Evolution Studios staff members Simon Benson and Ian Bickerstaff, both now employed by Sony's stereoscopic team as a senior development manager and a 3D specialist, respectively.

Back in September 2013, it was reported that Sony’s VR headset “will work similarly to Oculus Rift” and the peripheral has been demoed internally with PS4 exclusive DriveClub and the headset allows users to look around the cockpit of the car.

It was also rumored to have been shown behind-closed-doors at TGS 2013.

Sony's PlayStation VR headset is rumored to be set for a public reveal in 2014.
