Sony may release a PS4 Slim as well as the PS4 Neo, analyst says

It's raining consoles! If only it would rain money, specifically into my pockets.

A PS4 Slim is on the cards despite the forthcoming PS4 Neo, according to financial chatter.

The rumour comes to us via Macquarie Securities analyst Damian Thong, speaking to the Wall Street Journal, and is extremely cagey; Thong said the company "might also introduce a slimmer version of the PlayStation 4", revealing it at "a game show in September".

Sony did not comment on the news, and the report does not make it clear whether Thong was speculating or passing on something he'd learned.

Everyone's getting pretty excited anyway, because it makes a fair bit of sense: a PS4 Slim makes sense as an answer to the Xbox One S. With its expanded capabilities, PS4 Neo is closer in philosophy (if not power) to the Xbox Scorpio.

A September reveal seems likely, both for PS4 Neo and any PS4 Slim revision Sony may be planning, as Sony generally makes a splash at the Tokyo Game Show. Current speculation has the PS4 Neo down for an October release, too.

That is the end of this news but let's just take a moment to appreciate the Wall Street Journal's report on Sony's financial briefing (PlayStation good, everything else bad) because it ends with Sony's plans to introduce a new consumer robot, presumably in the spirit of the Aibo. Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai said the robot would be "capable of forming an emotional bond with customers" and would "inspire love and affection". Bless his heart.
