Skyrim: How to join the Dawnguard Faction

Join the expansion's faction (which is, of course, included in the Switch, PS VR, and Special Editions of the game).

The Dawnguard faction is home to the main and major quest for the appropriately-named Skyrim Expansion/DLC Dawnguard, and is a group of vampire-hunting warriors. They're a pretty cool lot. The stuff that was DLC originally is now, of course, included in every major version of the game, including the new Switch version.

If you know what you're looking for the Dawnguard are easy to find - their quest is the main one for the Dawnguard DLC, meaning that it's placed fairly squarely into your lap. If you're just tooling around the world of Skyrim it can still be pretty easy to pass over the trigger to get this DLC started and thus join the Dawnguard, though - but we've got you covered. Here's how to join this Van Helsing-style faction.

How to join the Dawnguard

  • The first thing you should know is that there's two different ways to get recruited to the Dawnguard depending on your level. If you're under Level 10, talk to the Nord Agmaer and he'll guide you. He can be found at the entrance of the Dayspring Canyon. Generally speaking, we'd suggest waiting until you've over Level 10, though.
  • Once you are Level 10, the quest can be given by an Orc called Durak or by a Hold Guard after you enter a hold capital. Doing so will give you directions to Dayspring Canyon, and here you'll find the previously-mentioned Agmaer. He'll guide you to Fort Dawnguard.
  • When you arrive at the fort you'll find them a friendly lot - you'll be given a free crossbow and talked to about the evil vampires the Dawnguard exist to take down. As part of all this you'll be automatically recruited into the Dawnguard, opening up the full contents of the Dawnguard DLC.
  • That's it. You'll now be a full member of the Dawnguard. The DLC content is pretty good and well worth your time. Again, we recommend you wait until Level 10 - the game naturally builds up to the Dawnguard content by having vampires appear from level 7 up, and rumours of the Dawnguard will appear from Level 10 on, thus helping you to get wind of the quest line.
