Shadow of the Colossus: here's a PS2/PS3/PS4 comparison video, and details on PS4 Pro upgrades

Shadow of the Colossus is coming to PS4 soon, and Pro users will have a choice between playing it in 'performance' or 'cinematic' mode.

Shadow of the Colossus is releasing for PS4 on February 6, 2018. We've already seen the game's new intro, and heard the developers commentate that same video, but otherwise there hasn't been a lot of news about the upcoming remake.

Some more details are coming out now, though, with the game's release fast approaching. Sony has released some details, and two new videos, on the PlayStation Blog, showing off how damn good the game is going to look on PS4.

First of all, here's a comparison video, showing the PS4 version against the PS2 original and the upscaled PS3 HD release. As you can see, it's much more detailed and smoother on PS4.

The other video details the two modes available to PS4 Pro users: 'performance' mode and 'cinematic' mode. In cinematic mode, the game targets a frame rate of 30 FPS, but some rendering techniques are improved slightly for the optimum visual experience. Performance mode targets 60FPS, making the whole experience a bit more fluid, but won't look quite as amazing. It's up to players which they would prefer.

We assume most people are going to go for the higher frame rate, which is really talked up in this video.

A Special Edition box set has also been announced for the game, giving players a few digital and physical goodies along with the game itself. These include:

  • Steelbook Collector’s Case with outer sleeve
  • Artist Postcards
  • Printed Manual
  • In-game Digital Extras (Ancient Bow, Cloak of Fate, “Spotted Steed” Agro skin)
  • Two Custom PS4 Themes
  • Colossi Avatar Set for PS4
  • Physical World Map
  • Colossi Stickers

Hopefully this remake will live up to our memories of the original.
