Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell takes its cues from - wait for it - Disney movies

Saints Row is famous for pushing the envelope with extreme content, so it's a little surprising to learn that the latest new content was inspired by family-friendly Disney movies.

Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell has players taking on the role of Johnny Gat or Kinzie Kensington and descending into hell to liberate the boss from a marriage to Stan's daughter. Along the way, they'll encounter a bevy of historical characters and franchise favourites.

Doesn't sound too much like Frozen or Snow White, unless your definition of hell is musical numbers. Why, by the way, Gat Out of Hell contains.

"I'm pretty certain that we'll be the only open-world game that comes out with a full-blown musical number in the middle of the critical path," creative director Steve Jaros told Destructoid.

"One of the things that we lean on [heavily] for inspiration for this is Disney movies. I'm a big Disney fan. For instance, if you remember stuff like in Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella, the beginning of the movies [have] the ornate story book that opens up. It's illuminated text and story-book pictures, and a narrator - that's kind of our story structure," he continued.

"Jane Austen narrates you through this fairy tale; [Satan's daughter] Jezebel is very much a sort of Disney princess."

And no, Gat Out of Hell isn't a parody or p**s take of Disney movies - it just "echoes some of those themes", Jaros said.

Well, I'll be. Destined for PC, PlayStation 3, PS4 and Xbox One, Stand-alone co-op expansion Gat Out of Hell is just one of a pair of Saints Row 4 announcements out of PAX 2014; the other is a next-gen overhaul, Saints Row 4: Re-Elected, coming to PS4 and Xbox One. Both are due in January.
