Rise of the Tomb Raider is a great PC port, if you've got the rig for it - video

Rise of the Tomb Raider shines on PC, provided that PC is a bit of a beast.

Rise of the Tomb Raider hit PC today and Crystal Dynamics seems pretty pleased with the results, as you'll see in this run down of PC-specific tech.

It sounds like the developer has good reason to pat itself on the back, as Eurogamer's Digital Foundry is full of praise for the port.

The group were especially enthusiastic about reduced input lag, which apparently makes combat much more responsive than on Xbox One. But it also gushed over the flexibility and ease of use of numerous graphical settings and options, as well as all the extra visual bells and whistles available for PC.

That said, there's one caveat: to get the most out of this port, you need a pretty good gaming PC.

"This is a demanding game to run on the high and very high presets, and compromises need to be made on less capable systems," the report notes.

"We recommend a Core i5 quad-core processor for this title and a GTX 960 for a better-than-console experience."

The "budget" level PC Digital Foundry uses for testing couldn't handle Rise of the Tomb Raider, with nasty frame rate drops even with graphics settings turned down to the same level as the Xbox One.

"The game is quite scalable, so it becomes possible to achieve more playable frame-rates by dialling back the more demanding settings, but it's important to note these limitations," Digital Foundry said.

"This is one of the few cases where our budget PC failed to get close to console performance levels, but as the video [below] hopefully demonstrates, even on medium settings, the game still looks very attractive."
