Resident Evil 2 Prologue Walkthrough - Gas Station Walkthrough for Resident Evil 2
For both Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy, Resident Evil 2 begins in a gas station on the outskirts of Raccoon City. In our Resident Evil 2 gas station walkthrough, we'll be detailing everything you need to make it through this area of the game as easily as possible.

In this walkthrough to the opening stages of Resident Evil 2 we're going to cover two main areas as you make your way to the Raccoon City Police Station.
Resident Evil 2 Gas Station Walkthrough
So, at the beginning of Resident Evil 2, you’ll be asked to select a campaign: Leon Kennedy, or Claire Redfield. This determines the character that you’ll be playing as for the game, but there are also story differences, for example where Leon encounters Ada Wong, Claire instead befriends Sherry Birkin.
But, no matter who you choose, this opening section will play out exactly the same. When Leon exits his car or Claire hops off her motorbike, you’ll want to head straight into the gas station by the main door, directly ahead of you.
Once your protagonist has picked up the flashlight, venture towards the door in the back left corner of the room. You’ll see a dying police officer on the way, who points towards the open door, which you should proceed through, and down the corridor to your right.
Open the door at the end of the corridor, and a brief cutscene will play out. After the cutscene is over, immediately aim your weapon by holding down the left trigger, and take aim at the head of the sole zombie in the room with the right analog stick. Press the right trigger to fire, and remember to make every shot count.
Now follow the path forwards the round to the right, and you’ll be able to pick up a key from the rack on the wall. Backtrack immediately, and turn left at the fork in the path. Here you’ll be able to interact with a locked door, and use the key to open it up.
You’re now back in the main shopping area of the gas station. There are now three zombies in this room with Leon or Claire, and you need to quickly make your way down the middle aisle, avoiding the now-zombified police officer to your right in the adjacent aisle.
Reach the door, and you’ll meet your companion. If you’re playing as Leon, then Claire will enter the gas station from the door, but if you’re playing as Claire, then it’ll be Leon that’s here to meet you. Either way, this is the conclusion of the gas station section of Resident Evil 2, and you can watch the opening credits play out.
Resident Evil 2 Raccoon City's Burning Streets Walkthrough
When you’re next back in control as Leon or Claire after the car crash in Raccoon City, it’s time to run. There’s now a horde of zombies bearing down on you, so turn to your right, and make your way around the crashed cars, with an unaware zombie on your left.
Once you’ve gone merely 10 meters or so, you can turn to your left, and you’ll see an alleyway. Immediately run down this alleyway, not stopping for the rising zombie at the end of the alley (remember, save those bullets!), and turn left, sprinting down some steps.
When Leon or Claire has made it to the end of this alleyway, they’ll remark that they’re almost at the Raccoon City police station. Now turn left, and you’ll see a path leading forward through the wreckage of crashed vehicles.
Turn right when you reach the burning school bus, and you’ll see the open gates of the Raccoon City police station before you. Sprint through the gates, avoiding all the zombies as you go, and Leon/Claire will slam the gate shut after. Proceed ahead through the double doors, and you’ve successfully made it to the Raccoon City police station, where you can use the typewriter to save your progress for the first time in the game.
