Report - UK games sales overtook video in 2011

The UK"s Electronic Retailing Association estimates video games have finally overtaken movies and TV in terms of total sales.

The ERA, as reported by That VideoGame Blog, claims games generated £1.93 billion in sales over 2011, more than any other sector in the entertainment sphere. The sales figures account for both physical, retail sales and downloads - including apps.

Blu-Ray, DVD and other video media came in second £1.8 billion.

"This is a dramatic time for the entertainment market. It is an historic development for the games sector to have overtaken video last year. Video has long been the biggest entertainment sector,” ERA general director Kim Bayley said.

The music industry came in at a relatively distant third with £1.07 billion. Overall, the entertainment industry noted a revenue drop over 2010.
