Report: Apple building Siri-powered TV for 2012-2013 release

New York Times blogger Nick Bilton has claimed that Apple is deep in development on a Siri-powered, Apple-branded TV for release in either late 2012 or early 2013.

The device will do away with our ridiculous array of remotes, Bilton assures, and no doubt bring Apple's games offering direct to your living room without need for a separate iDevice.

SAI's distilled the info:

  • Apple has been working on its TV solution since 2007.
  • A year ago, a source of Bilton's said a TV was a "guaranteed product" for Apple, because "Steve thinks the industry is totally broken."
  • Barclays estimates that TVs could quickly be a $19 billion business for Apple, assuming the company only captures 5% of the market.
  • To roll out a TV, Apple has to wait until the price of 42-inch displays falls further.
  • Bilton thinks we'll see the TV in late 2012 or early 2013.

The news, if true, will stun the tech trade and show a clear innovation route forward for Apple after the death of Steve Jobs.

Apple was heavily criticised over the announcement and release of iPhone 4S recently for failing to take a significant step forward with the product.
