Red Dead Redemption 2 couldn't topple FIFA 19's record at UK retail

Red Dead Redemption 2's first week on sale in the UK has yielded impressive results, but not enough to beat FIFA 19's opening week.

Red Dead Redemption 2's retail sales in the UK are more than double that of the original game, according to GfK. Despite this, Rockstar's anticipated game couldn't sell faster than FIFA 19 in its opening week.

The game is now the second fastest-seller in the UK at retail this year, followed by Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. 68% of units were PS4. Red Dead Redemption 2 also couldn't beat GTA 5's record of 2 million copies in a week, though that game launched on a Tuesday compared to the RDR's Friday release.

This performance can be attributed to the dominance of digital vs physical today compared to when the original game - or even GTA 5 - launched. Rockstar games typically hold their value for very long, mostly because owners aren't usually in a hurry to sell them used. It makes sense that players chose the digital option, seeing as they're likely not to get rid of it.

FIFA games, on the other hand, release annually and don't hold their value for long. Many FIFA players sell their copies closer to the next game's release. Until Take-Two releases actual sales figure, we won't be able to say for sure.
