Red Dead Redemption 2 Bug Causes Important NPCs to Disappear: Here's a Fix

If you've wandered into your base camp in Red Dead Redemption 2 and wondered where everyone is, it's not just you. A bug was discovered in Red Dead Redemption 2 that causes important NPC gang buds to just up and disappear. Luckily there's a fix coming.

Reports from players revealed a strange bug in Red Dead Redemption 2 that pops up around the second chapter of the game. Once active the bug causes important NPCs like John Marston and Sadie Adler to disappear from the base camp. Rockstar identified the bug and issued a workaround until a proper fix can be implemented via an update.

"If you completed the mission 'Polite Society, Valentine Style' at the start of Chapter 2, but needed to use the Retry Checkpoint feature, then Sadie, Jack, John, and Abigail will only appear in camp when they have missions for you to complete," Rockstar Games writes in a support page post. "We are aware of the issue and are currently working on a fix to be included in an upcoming Title Update."

In the meantime, Rockstar recommends not using the Retry Checkpoint feature in the Polite Society mission. Instead, if players fail the mission or are killed Rockstar recommends restarting the entire mission, or loading a save from before the mission failed. If neither option is doable then these NPCs will be missing until Chapter 4.

This isn't a game-breaking bug. These NPC characters will still appear when there are missions needed to be done so you'll still progress through the game as if they were there. However, what you will miss out on are some of the non-essential, but narratively-interesting side conversations you can have with the NPCs around your camp.

We'll have an update when we find out when Rockstar plans on pushing the fix but check out our Red Dead Redemption 2 guide for the best tips, so you won't have to restart the Polite Society mission. If you've beaten the game check out our Red Dead Redemption 2 spoiler guide for more secrets.
