Legendary Onyx Wolf Location in Red Dead Online

To find the legendary Onyx Wolf in Red Dead Online you'll need to head to Ambarino at the North of the map, more specifically the area between the Wapiti Indian Reservation and the Dakota River. Though we've heard the Onyx wolf can appear at any time, we've heard rumors that it's more prominent overnight. We've also only seen it appear in dry weather, so if it's raining, it's possible your chances might be reduced. We've laid out the exact location below for you to check, but if you're still having trouble finding it, check our guide here in what to do and how to make them spawn.

There's no shortage of Red Dead guides to help you master the Wild West here at USG, whether it's in the single player campaign or online mode. You can find them all here at our Red Dead Guides Hub.

How to Hunt the Onyx Wolf

You'll know the Onyx Wolf by its dark fur and a few white stripes around its neck (though these might not be easily seen). However, it's often hanging around with other, regular brown wolves, and all of them will attack you, usually circling the player and striking from all different angles.

If this happens, the best thing you can do is find some high ground they can't climb, ideally a rock, building or raised section of cliff. Once there, you should be safe to fire on them as much as you like. If there's no such high ground, prioritize shooting the nearest wolves, using a shotgun for the close-range instant kills. Then try killing - or at least sedating - the Onyx Wolf itself. A powerful gun should take about five shots to kill it, and the sedative ammo should take roughly twice that.

Spare or Skin the Onyx Wolf?

We suggest that you kill the Onyx Wolf the first time you encounter it, as its pelt can be sold to Gus, or made into an awesome coat. This isn't cheap, however - Gus will require $504.00 to make the coat itself, which includes a thick wolf's head resting on top of your own.
