Razer reveals $400 VR headset to compete with Oculus Rift and HTC Vive

Razer announced a new VR headset at E3 2016 designed to compete with the likes of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Dubbed the Hacker Development Kit (HDK) 2.0, this is the second one of these announced by Razer as part of the OSVR initiative, the platform it co-founded with Sensics.

It's due out in July for a retail price of $399.99. Although still in development, Razer says the headset's quality is comparable to that of the Rift or Vive, unlike the early model - which still retails for $299.

On top of being compatible with games designed for the OSVR platform, the new headset can also play SteamVR games that work with standard controllers. It features a 2160×1200 resolution, dual OLED displays and 90hz refresh rate.

It also has custom lenses, which Razer says will help with problems some players have of not being able to see individual pixels, especially those who wear prescription glasses.

"The HDK 2 allows us to meet the needs of VR fans and gamers and provide developers with affordable open-source hardware to innovate with," said head of Razer OSVR Christopher Mitchel.

"With the HDK 2 being able to deliver a visual experience on par with industry leaders, we will now be able to represent hardware agnostic VR media and games in all their glory for future headsets to adopt through the open source ecosystem."
