PUBG gets Apex Legends-style ping system, ledge grab, new weapon and armoured vehicle

PUBG has received a new update today on PC.

This is PUBG's 30th patch after leaving Steam Early Access, and it's one of the most significant. The recently tested Erangel overhaul did not return, but there's still plenty to get excited about. It's a big download, too, at 17.4GB 5.4GB.

The most significant addition in today's patch is an item ping communication system similar to the one in Apex Legends. The feature is contextual, and will allow players to call out specific items - such as loot, request ammo, relay the location of an enemy and much more.

Doing this will display the corresponding message in small window to the left of the screen, but won't play a voice. From the looks of it, most of what you can do in Apex can be applied here, with some exceptions.

As promised, the patch also introduces the first version of the new ledge grab mechanic. This works as you'd expect, letting you grab ledges of rooftops or windows, or get over high walls. This can also be done in mid-air by holding the jump button. In the future, PUBG Corp. will expand ledge grab to also allow players to hang and slide down railings.

The BRDM-2 armoured vehicle is another big part of the patch. This amphibious APC replaces the armoured UAZ, and like that vehicle, can only be called in using a flare gun fired from outside the safe zone. It has twice as much health as a normal UAZ, and its wheels cannot be punctured. It also provides some protection from grenades and the Red Zone.

While we're on the subject of new content, there's the new Desert Eagle pistol to look forward to. The Deagle spawns on all maps, and does more damage than any other pistol in PUBG. It fires .45 ACP and accepts extended mags, laser pointer, and red dot and holo sights.

PUBG Corp. also decided to make gas cans more useful. Now, if you shoot them they will explode, dealing damage to anyone nearby. They will also continue to serve their current function as fuel.
