PS4's 'Playroom' tech demo may get expanded release at launch, says Sony

PlayStation 4's new controller and camera functionality was shown off at E3 using a series of tech demos called Playroom, and it was said to have wowed onlookers so much that Sony is now considering expanding it with more games and releasing it to the public.

The demo was created by PS4 hardware and software developers to showcase what the PS4's new control methods were capable of, and includes a touch and motion-controlled version of Pong, among other demo games.

It was never intended to be released to the public, but that may change based on its strong reaction at E3 last month.

Speaking with Polygon, SCEA senior producer Tsubasa Inaba said "Conceptionally it follows the DNA of [PS Vita's] Welcome Park.

"That's actually the perfect example. Our R&D teams for hardware and our software teams worked to put that application together. It was a very similar situation for this one."

Inaba added that following E3, internal Sony studios started to think of other games for the demo, and when asked if Playroom could come pre-installed on PS4 hardware he replied, "Perhaps. We hope to have a more definitive answer to that question in the next month or two."
