PS4 watch: job post suggests on-board speech recognition

PlayStation 4 could have built-in voice recognition, similar to Microsoft's Kinect speech functions, according to a job post unearthed recently.

The LinkedIn job post was discovered by IGN and was originally published on April 30.

Based in San Francisco, the 'Speech Recognition Engineering Intern' role requires, "Some previous knowledge of speech recognition and signal processing," and tasks will include handling of, "Speech noise reduction, speech detection, recognition, noisy rejection, and grammar processing under various environments".

Other duties include, "Robust speech feature extraction and signal processing for speech enhancement, speech enhance and processing of noisy speech with human voice in the background," suggesting that whatever this tech is, it is intended for use in an environment where there may be other people chatting or making noise. This could point to PS4 speech functions in a busy living room for example.

The jury is still out on this one until we hear more about the PS4's functions. But what do you think? Could the console's sensor tech also include speech recognition functions? Let us know what you think below.
