PS4 dev kits pricey, but Sony "handing them out like candy" - rumour

PlayStation 4 doesn't allow user self-publishing like the Xbox One, but rumour has it Sony isn't exactly shy about granting development kits to independent teams.

Polygon cites unnamed developer sources for word that a middle-of-the-road PlayStation 4 development kits cost $2,500 - five times the cost of an Xbox One, which functions as its own dev kit.

That said, Sony isn't actually selling the things, apparently; sources said the company is awarding dev kits on one year loans at no cost.

"All the indies I know got them for free. Sony has been amazing about kits and development thus far," one anonymous commenter said.

"They are handing them out like candy," another commented.

Sony confirmed it does loan development kits and also highlighted its historic support of self-publishing and Pub Fund indie program; it also said that a dev kit isn't required until a project is quite mature, so many indie devs don't need them right now.

Interestingly, Polygon's sources said those who want to self-publish on Xbox One will need to pay a fee of a few hundred dollars; Microsoft has not confirmed this.
