PS3 firmware update 4.40 hits all territories, adds NFC reader support

Sony has released a new firmware update for all territories that lets the console communicate with the company's RC-S380 NFC-powered reader device.

First seen on PS Blog Japan, the post has details on the update here, and you can see that it allows functionality between PS3 and the S380 device.

The S380's product page can be found here. It's a USB NFC device that reads contact-less IC cards. It's been out in Japan, Europe and America since last year.

Beyond that there is little information on how the device can be used with PS3.

It could have something to do with an NFC patent filed by Sony last year. The patent sparked rumours that PS4 would block the use of second-hand games by tagging them using NFC technology. Check it out here.
