Here's what to expect with Pokemon Sword and Shield's second DLC Crown Tundra

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have provided additional details for Crown Tundra, the second DLC included with the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass.

Details on the second Pokemon Sword and Shield DLC, Crown Tundra, have been provided.

Later this year, the second area unlocked by the Expansion Pass will be the snowy Crown Tundra. In it, a man named Peony will appoint you as the leader of his exploration team and task you with investigating the frozen land. You will also explore the Pokemon Dens seen during Max Raid Battles, and come across unseen Legendary Pokemon which make the Crown Tundra their home.

In the second part of the expansion, Trainers can team up with three others to go on a Dynamax Adventure, where they will be able to venture into the aforementioned Pokemon Dens and even encounter Dynamax Pokemon.

If Trainers do encounter a Dynamax Pokemon during their exploration, they’ll need to work together in a Max Raid Battle. You will get a chance to catch a Dynamax Pokemon for your team if the battle is won, but you will be kicked out of the den should you lose.

In Crown Tundra, once you progress far enough on your adventure, you will be able to participate in the Galarian Star Tournament. In this tournament, you’ll battle with various characters met in the main game, but not just as opponents as you will also be able to pick a teammate to battle in the tournament together.

The newly discovered Legendary Pokemon in the second part of the expansion will be Regieleki, an Electric-type with the ability Transistor. The Pokemon used the signature Electric-type special move, Thunder Cage, which fires bolts of electricity from its lower half, trapping opponents directly below it in a cage of lightning. This cage will also cause damage every turn for four to five turns and prevent opponents from fleeing or being swapped out.

Another Legendary Pokemon, Regidrago will be found. This creature is a Dragon Orb Pokemon with the ability of Dragon’s Maw. The signature move is Dragon Energy and finds the Pokemon taking on a shape similar to a dragon’s head and firing dragon energy from its mouth. The more HP the user has remaining, the higher the move’s power.

You will also find Legendary Pokemon bearing strong resemblances to Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres.

These Pokemon seem to bear Ice-type, Electric-type, and Fire-type characteristics, respectively, and were previously thought to be the same as the Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres seen in other regions - but they are distinct variants.

Here’s a breakdown for each:

Galarian Articuno

  • Category: Cruel Pokemon
  • Type: Psychic/Flying
  • Height: 5ʹ7″
  • Weight: 112.2 lbs.
  • Ability: Competitive

Once every several decades, this migratory Pokemon appears in the Crown Tundra. Galarian Articuno’s signature move, Freezing Glare, is a Psychic-type special move in which the Pokemon attacks by firing psychic power from both eyes. This move may also leave the target frozen.

Galarian Zapdos

  • Category: Strong Legs Pokemon
  • Type: Fighting/Flying
  • Height: 5ʹ3″
  • Weight: 128.3 lbs.
  • Ability: Defiant

Once every several decades, this migratory Pokemon appears in the Crown Tundra. Galarian Zapdos’s signature move, Thunderous Kick, is a Fighting-type physical move that overwhelms the target with lightning-like movement before delivering a kick. This also lowers the target’s Defense stat.

Galarian Moltres

  • Category: Malevolent Pokemon
  • Type: Dark/Flying
  • Height: 6ʹ7″
  • Weight: 145.5 lbs.
  • Ability: Berserk

Once every several decades, this migratory Pokemon appears in the Crown Tundra. Galarian Moltres’s signature move, Fiery Wrath, is a Dark-type special move in which the Pokemon transforms its wrath into a fire-like aura to attack. It may also make opposing Pokemon flinch.

Crown Tundra will be released in the fall, but the first DLC as part of the Expansion Pass, The Isle of Armor, will be released on June 17.

The Expansion Pass is available for purchase in the eShop. It will run you $29.99 or the regional equivalent.
