PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has plenty of performance issues on Xbox One

The Game Preview version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which launched yesterday, is facing some problems.

PUBG was always going to launch on Xbox One in a state behind where the PC version is right now, but it's a little further back than we anticipated. Some more recent additions are in the game (vaulting, for instance, is intact), but there are also some features just outright missing from this iteration.

More pressing, right now, are the performance issues. Last week we were told that PUBG would hit 30fps on Xbox One, but it seems like it struggles to do that, at least at launch. There have been some pretty major texture pop-in problems, too. Digital Foundry has an excellent run-down of the game's issues, both on Eurogamer and in the video below.

As they point out, the game looks "absolutely dreadful" in the opening lobby and during the plane drop at the start, and the game drops well below 20fps in several spots. As the match goes on, though, things improve - although the Xbox One X has a much more consistent frame-rate, the Xbox One version can hit 30fps too. It just "varies dramatically", as they say.

As their write-up points out, there seems to be some input lag too, and all of this works together to make shoot-outs a bit tricky. From my own experience, the controller layout is also difficult to come to terms with, with buttons typically serving multiple functions depending on whether they are pressed or held.

As Digital Foundry points out though, the game isn't exactly famed for its stability on PC, so this is, to some extended, to be expected.

If you've been playing it anyway (as I have), then check out Sherif's guide to the game - he's got plenty of useful advice.

PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds does not have a definite release date for version 1.0 on Xbox One, but we imagine it'll remain in Game Preview for a while yet.
