The makers of Samorost launch deck-building adventure Pilgrims

Amanita Designs, the maker of Machinarium and the Samorost series, has released a new adventure called Pilgrims.

The last time we heard from Amanita was in 2019, when the studio hinted at the release of its first horror platformer Creaks. Here we were minding our own business, and it turns out the indie developer has apparently been quietly toiling away behind the scenes on a whole new game entirely.

Pilgrims is a storybook-like adventure game with an item-swapping, deck-building gameplay system and a gorgeous art style reminiscent of Machinarium, all 2D and hand-crafted, only this time with a cast of quaint bears and babushka-wearing grannies.

The game's card-based, deck-building gameplay - which you can check out in the video below - appears to be similar to the card system introduced in Samorost 3. In Pilgrims, all items appear as cards in your deck and trigger different results in the game. For instance, you can fight a bear by drawing your Sword card or can alternatively select the Broom card and he'll balance the item on the tip of his nose.

Amanita is pushing Pilgrims as a game to played more than once. "Don’t beat it," reads the game's Steam page, "play with it! Solve the various tasks using dozens of items and unique characters without being obliged to follow a single designated path."

"Roam the land as you please and make new friends, share a laugh with your fellow travelers and help them complete their little stories, your way. How many different solutions can you find?"

Pilgrims is now available for PC, Linux, Mac, and Apple Arcade for $5. Creaks is currently slated to release sometime in 2020.
