Payday 2 on Switch: last-gen-quality assets and a poor performance - report

The Nintendo Switch version of Payday 2 does not live up to expectations, but some of its problems are more pronounced than others.

You may have guessed from reading the reviews for Payday 2 on Switch that this isn't exactly the game's best port. New analysis reveals some of the cutbacks made on Switch compared to other consoles, and how it affects the overall experience.

Payday 2 runs at 900p in TV mode, and drops to 720p in handheld mode, according to Digital Foundry report. The visual presentation takes a hit compared to PS4, however unsurprisingly. Although the Switch port does use good AA, the image is a step down from PS4 in several areas.

Texture resolution, shadow quality, and anisotropic filtering are all below other consoles. This gives the image a softer look not seen anywhere else. The hardware specs of the Nintendo Switch aren't comparable to PS4 or Xbox One, obviously, but the issue is that all of these cutbacks don't help the game's performance.

The report reveals that, although Payday 2 targets 30fps, the frame-rate is very inconsistent. Some levels will maintain 30fps for a decent amount of time, while others see drops in the 20s in the worst case.

Another problem that exacerbates frame-rate drops is that the game's speed is tied to frame-rate. In other words, everything you and the enemies do slows down anytime it drops, which is different from your typical frame-rate drops in other games.
