Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter has predicted PS3 hardware sales will be up by a massive figure year-on-year in this Thursday's January NPD results.

Speaking in his NPD preview, the analyst said sales of the console will be up 62 percent from January 2009, with estimates at 330k sold during the month, but will narrowly miss out on beating Xbox 360.

The Microsoft machine's predicted to have sold 340,000, up 10 percent year-on-year.

Wii is still expected to be the main home console winner with sales of 555K, despite a 19 percent loss at the same period last year.

Pachter also predicted the big software winners will be Mass Effect 2, Darksiders, Modern Warfare 2, New Super Mario. Bros, Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort.

The official figures are released on Thursday.
