Pac-Man joins Super Smash Bros. roster, Sakurai explains Wii U delay

Namco Bandai is helping with the development of Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U, so it's only fitting that the publisher's famous mascot make an appearance.

During a Nintendo round table discussion at E3 2014, Nintendo confirmed that Pac-Man is joining the roster of Super Smash Bros.

Pac-Man is making his debut, but one returning character was also confirmed - Mr. Game & Watch. The two new announces join Mii Fighter and Palutena, who were confirmed during an earlier Nintendo event.

Gematsu reports the Pac-Man World version of the famous spherical hero is the one we'll see in game. That means arms and legs; he'll be able to throw fruit and use power pellets.

The other major story out of the event concerns the gap between the 3DS version's release in October and the Wii U version's as yet undated launch.

According to Destructoid, director Masahiro Sakurai said the game requires so much debugging that the entire staff of several hundred developers will focus on one platform at a time to ensure a quality release.

The reason the two cannot be debugged together is that one is not a port of the other - they're built on entirely distinct architecture.
