Overwatch's Moira sure has an interesting backstory

Blizzard announced a new support healer for Overwatch today during BlizzCon 2017, and she has a quite the backstory.

Along with information on her backstory, the new Overwatch hero Moira was also given an origins trailer which was shown at BlizzCon 2017. You can watch it below.

The Talon affiliated Moira O’Deorain, according to her bio, is a geneticist whose base of operations is Dublin and Oasis.

According to Moira's origin story, the controversial genetic engineer was searching for a way to "rewrite the fundamental building blocks of life."

Over a decade ago, Moira published a paper detailing how to create custom genetic programs enabling scientists to alter DNA at a cellular level. The end goal was to help overcome diseases and disorders while "maximizing human potential."

Of course, many in her field found such work to be dangerous and unethical. This led to accusations of her harboring the same "unchecked desire for scientific advancement that some believed had caused the Omnic Crisis."

To add insult to injury, many other geneticists were unable to reproduce Moira's results, calling her discoveries into question and damaging her reputation.

In steps Overwatch's covert ops division Blackwatch, which allowed Moira to continue her research in secret while also developing new weapons and technologies for the organization. Inquiries following the Venice incident brought her employment to light causing many Overwatch officials to "disavow all knowledge of her affiliation with Blackwatch."

Here's more of Moira's origin story straight from Blizzard:

After Overwatch was disbanded, O'Deorain was forced to turn to unconventional sources of funding. This time, she was invited to join the scientific collective that had founded the city of Oasis. Yet some have whispered that the shadowy Talon organization had already been supporting her for years, aiding her experiments in exchange for utilizing the results for their own purposes.

Though O'Deorain will go to any lengths to make scientific breakthroughs, her work is still unknown to most of the world. But now that she has been freed from all constraints, it is only a matter of time before everything changes.

What's she doing to Reaper in that video? Looks like Moira was the one who turned Gabriel Reyes into his current state. At least, it appears that way. Many folks owe Mercy and apology, then.

Moira's abilities are biotic in nature, and enable her to contribute short and long-range damage. You can find out more on those through her Overwatch announcement post.

The new Overwatch character is playable at BlizzCon 2017 this weekend but there's no word just yet on a release date.
