Blizzard says it's more focused on Overwatch's gameplay than on the business model

Blizzard hasn't decided how it plans to monetize post-launch content for is team-based shooter Overwatch.

Speaking with Eurogamer, game director Jeff Kaplan reiterated that post-launch heroes and maps will be introduced to the game as free updates.

Kaplan said the team is "really happy" with the business model, but as far as the future is concerned, the team hasn't figured that out just yet.

"We haven't locked in exactly whether there'll be additional monetizsation after launch or not," said Kaplan. "Some of that is because we want to watch the launch itself and see how successful that is, and see what sort of player base we end up with and see how engaged they are.

"Our biggest concern with Overwatch isn't about how many ways in which we can monetize people, but making sure that the game is really fun. From there, it's easier to figure out what to do."

During BlizzCon, the studio said it would keep an eye on things as the beta continued, and if players felt more content was needed, the team would look into it.

All versions of the game for PC, PS4 and Xbox One come with 21 heroes, all maps, content and gameplay features. Again, this was reiterated earlier in the week.

"All the heroes are going to be included and as gamers, we thought it was a very straightforward, easy to understand business model," Kaplam explained. "You focus less on the business model and more on the game itself. And we were really not expecting [to be asked during BlizzCon] what's going to happen after the game has launched. We hadn't figured out what we were going to do yet and people kept asking the question.

"Collectively, the Overwatch team and the Blizzard executive team were able to say that for this game, when we patch in new heroes or a new map, you're going to be able to get it for free. I understand where this player stress comes from and in hindsight, it seems so obvious. I totally get why players had apprehension. It was very nice to put that at ease."

Blizzard plans to release Overwatch in spring 2016 “on or before” June 21.
