On Steam, Call of Duty WW2 has the highest concurrent player count since Black Ops 2

It looks like Call of Duty has bounced back after some disappointing results last year.

We already knew that Call of Duty WW2's physical sales were up massively on 2016's Infinite Warfare, but the game's Steam stats suggest that it's the most popular Call of Duty game in some time.

According to Githyp, WW2 has seen a peak player count of 56,000 since its debut last week in multiplayer alone. Coupled with players in campaign, it hit 76,000 - a huge improvement on Infinite Warfare's highest peak of 15,000 players.

To be clear, Infinite Warfare's sales figures were still amazing, even if players dropped right off. Call of Duty has been more popular on console than PC for a long time now, too. So all of this indicates that the game is doing very well.

To find a Call of Duty that has performed better on Steam you have to go all the way back to Black Ops 2 - a game so enduringly popular that in 2014 twice as many people were playing it as the more recently-released Ghosts, and when it became backwards compatible on Xbox One in April it outsold Infinite Warfare for the month.

On Steam, Black Ops 2 peaked at 70,000 players in multiplayer, and for the multiplayer 99,000 overall. Numbers have gone down since then, but WW2 has been popular enough that Sledgehammer Games is struggling to keep it stable.

It seems like Call of Duty fans were extremely ready for a return to World War 2 - or, perhaps, after drifting away from the series anything that looked different from the last few years of releases would have been a good fit. In any case, if you're after a new Call of Duty, you can be assured that this one is likely to remain populated for a while.
