Oculus Rift needs to move 50-100M units to be "meaningful computing platform" - Zuckerberg

Oculus Rift will need to sell between 50 million and 100 million over the next ten years in order to be "a meaningful thing as a computing platform,” according to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

During yesterday's Q3 2014 earnings call to investors, Zuckerberg said the device will eventually "become a business" once the audience and the ecosystem is built.

“It’s hard to predict exactly but I don’t think it’s going to get to 50 million or 100 million units in the next few years," he told investors per The Guardian. "So that will take a few cycles of the device to get there.

“And then when you get to that scale, that’s when it starts to be interesting as a business in terms of developing out the ecosystem. So when I’m talking about that as a ten year thing, it’s building the first set of devices and building the audience and the ecosystem around that until it eventually becomes a business.”

Facebook purchased Oculus for $2 billion back in July of this year, and the headset is expected to retail for around the $200-$400 mark.
