Oculus Rift developing games internally, Carmack on board

Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake and Rage creative John Carmack is lending his talents to Oculus Rift's internal games development program.

Speaking with Engadget, Oculus Rift CEO Brendan Iribe confirmed the VR headset company has an internal games development team. Although Carmack joined Oculus Rift as chief technical officer, he's elected to be part of games creation too.

"He's working on a lot of exciting tech, but his heart and soul and history certainly lies in the game development side," he said.

The executive likened Carmack's involvement a similar to the way companies like Epic and id use their own engine tech

"It's certainly been id's philosophy in the past. It's been John Carmack's philosophy - you gotta eat your own dog food here, and develop internal content also," he said.

It's early days yet for Oculus Rift's software team, but Oculus Rift recruiting will ramp up recruitment of games developers in the next six to 12 months.

"We'll see where it goes, but I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't do more and more internal development," Iribe said.

The internal software team is additive to Oculus Rift's efforts to source third party support for the VR tech, for which purpose it hired former EA Partners boss David DeMartini.

Oculus Rift is working towards a consumer version of the device, and a new build is on show at CES 2014.

The tech has also begun to attract interest from companies like Ford, who have found industrial applications.
