NPD: Guitar Hero 3 top-selling game in the US with LtD sales of $830.9 million

NPD has gathered gross sales data reflecting gross game sales since 1995, and it finds three Call of Duty titles on the list, but surprisingly, Black Ops does not top the list - yet.

Activision is responsible for five of the 10, while Nintendo holds four spots, and Viacom one spot. All games on the list were released after 2007.

According to data compiled by NPD, Black Ops is sitting at number two only because as of February, it was $43.5 million in sales behind the game sitting in the top spot - Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock.

The third installment of the recently canceled franchise has life-to-date sales of $830.9 million, and the revenue reported by NPD which does not take into account earnings from downloadable tracks on PSN, Wii, or XBL.

All in all, music games took up three slots on the chart.

NPD did not include inflation or titles bundled with console hardware on the list, but if it were to, Wii Sports would tops in both unit sales and revenue. Instead, two of Nintendo's Wii Fit titles hit the list, showing just how much the industry has changed over the last few years - neither a Halo or Grand Theft Auto title was included on this list.

Life-to-date sales from the top five games in NPD's list top $3.7 billion, and it must be taken into consideration that some titles cost more than the standard $60: Wii Fit was $100 due to the included balanced board, and Wii Fit Plus is $90.

Music games also carried higher costs due to the peripherals included in the packaging, some costing upwards of $200.

NPD declined to provide figures for games holding slots below the top 5, still, we sent a mail requesting further clarification.

Here's some figures for you:

  1. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - $830.9 million
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops - $787.4 million
  3. Wii Fit w/Balance Board - $736.6 million
  4. Modern Warfare 2 - $713.6 million
  5. Rock Band - $670.7 million
  6. Wii Play w/Wii Remote
  7. Guitar Hero World Tour
