NPD April 2010 hardware: DS the clear winner

The NPD Group has releases the hardware figures for the month, and on the hardware side, it looks like DS was the clear winner at 440.8K units moved.

Wii came in second with 277.2K units moved.

While that may sound peach from a consumer perspective, it's not.

DS may have topped the charts this month, but it's down by approximately 259.2K units since last month, when it moved over 700K.

Wii's down from 557.5K units in March to 277.2K for the month, which is a 280.3K drop.

PS3 and Xbox 360 came in close with the later beating out Sony by just 4600 units.

Overall, hardware saw a 37 percent decline to $249.3M.

Here's the full thing:

  • DS - 440.8K
  • Wii - 277.2K
  • Xbox 360 - 185.4K
  • PS3 - 180.8K
  • PSP - 65.5K

NPD analyst Anita Fraizer has attributed the decline in sales to an upsurge in portable gaming, and does not feel that the purported Wii shortage by Nintendo had anything to do with these less-than-stellar numbers.

"As far as the Wii is concerned, this month's unit sales are fairly in-line with what was sold last July and August," she wrote in her report. "I have heard rumblings on the street about inventory issues, but only Nintendo could clarify that situation."
