New Resident Evil movie in production, to release in 2012

According to a Box Office Mojo report, a new Resident Evil movie is currently in production and already has a release date - September 14, 2012.

The untitled movie will be the fifth in the RE series, and will come with 3D support.

Last year's Resident Evil Afterlife, was, by far, the highest grossing RE movie ever made, generating over $236 million in revenue, which is "about as much as the first three movies combined," the site observed.

Most of Afterlife's success was due to the movie supporting 3D viewing, as nearly 80 percent of the movie's domestic revenue came from its 3D screenings, according to the report.

The movie will be produced by Sony pictures and will release two years after Afterlife, the shortest gap between two Resident Evil movie releases so far.

Capcom appears to be increasingly enamoured with the silver screen: a Devil May Cry movie is also reported to be in production.
